Rachel Rose Seely - a multi-disciplinary filmmaker
After leaving film school I shot the seminal documentary A London Someting Dis charting the genesis of London Jungle scene. I went on to set up Sharp Image Productions with my two partners, where we focused on making music documentaries and promos on the UK’s multicultural underground dance scene in the 90’s. Later I pursued my passion of screenwriting and my first two features went into development. Caught by the lure of the open road I went travelling resulting in a feature documentary on a Rajasthani gypsy caste - Daughters of the Sapera. I returned to do an MA, after starting a family, as I wished to develop my practice away from the industry.
I’ve not only directed my own projects, but also developed a broad skillset working for others, including editing and production. This has helped my ability as a director, as I am able to understand what it takes to bring a production into fruition at every level.
I connect to the world through film in all forms, from documentary to narrative to fine art. Short form writing and photography has given me a quick-fire palette away from the media industry, which allows a more intimate way of expression. It’s an interesting and exciting time, where the multi-layered opportunities across digital platforms are being embraced and perhaps instead of distancing can deepen human connection. I am currently creating a film practice that aims to breakdown barriers between what is documentary and fiction to create a cinematic language that is as much felt as understood.
I work as an Associate Lecturer at Falmouth University and am currently developing a short film, plus several feature projects, one of which is based where I currently live in Cornwall. I am available for commercial hire as an editor, producer and director.
